Color-Hunting and Cutout Art
a beautiful, simple activity to notice the beauty around you
Since this week we’ve talked about slowing down and taking the time to be awed, here’s an idea to help your kids be better noticers of the beauty around you!
Here’s the gist: cut out a design or frame from cardboard or thick paper, and walk around looking at nature through it! If using scissors, puncture a hole in the space you want to cut, then slide scissors in and cut. A craft knife would work best for this activity; I’ve seen them at Dollar Tree.
You can make little frames for your kids to look through as a reminder that art and beauty are all around you!
Consider choosing a particular color to hunt for and zero in on. (Offer to take a picture of the frame when your kids find the picture!)
Here’s where it gets really cool: cut out pieces of an image and let the background be filled in by nature. This flower took maybe three or four minutes to draw and cut out.
I made a couple printables for you, if you want to get really into it! This idea was inspired by the jaw-dropping paper cutout art by Rudy Willingham.
You could even use a photo of one of your kids and design their outfit using nature!
One more idea: cut out your child’s name! (Sorry in advance if your kid’s name has a lot of letters and/or curves 😅)
And you know what’s cool? Being a noticer is contagious. When I took one of my daughters outside to do this activity, she said “There’s some honeysuckle over there!” and quickly scrambled onto a rock to gather some. Somehow her eagle-eyes spotted it from far away; she was in Nature-Noticing Mode!
I hope this helps you get outside and notice a few lovely things this weekend.
And if you can’t get outside? This activity is still fun indoors.
Have a great weekend!
Warmly,
