July 21 // Treasure Map Pizza, Dragon Eggs, Ronto Wraps, and more!
some easy ways to make food more whimsical
Hello! As we end our month’s focus on childlikeness, fun, and stories, here are some food items that will bring some magic and fun to your day! They don’t even take much extra effort!
Treasure Map Pizza
All you have to do is use put toppings on your favorite pizza dough to make a map! We used a Publix pre-rolled dough and kept ours simple to reduce waste: black beans to dot the line to an X made out of red peppers, and we used broccolini to act as forests. Drizzle with olive oil and add salt, pepper, and some dried herbs before baking, and you’ve got an extra-tasty pizza! If you google “Treasure Map Pizza,” you’ll see some super creative ideas! You guys made some amazing spring focaccia art, so I’d love to see what you come up with for treasure map pizzas.
We sautéed the leftover beans and broccolini in olive oil, garlic, and spices, and topped with some cheese for a side dish. (The leftovers were also used in the Ronto Wraps later in this post.)
Dragon Eggs
This one is really fun to make, and if eating for breakfast, you’ll want to make them the night before.
Make hard-boiled eggs with your favorite method. I baked mine in a muffin tin at 350 F for 30 minutes, then put them in an ice bath for awhile. Leave the eggshells on!
Kids will love this part: gently put cracks all over the egg-shell. You don’t any deep gashes, but you want little cracks all over it. None of these will turn out perfectly, so it’s not a big deal.
Normally we don’t recommend food coloring, but, well, this is really cool 😅 Mix food coloring of your choice (we used purple) with water in a bowl, and put your cracked eggs in it. Soak overnight!
When you unpeel them in the morning, you’ll find colorful veins all over! Again, don’t expect perfection here, but they should look cool enough!
Ronto Wraps (or any Fantasy Meat)
If you’ve ever been to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you might’ve checked out the well-themed restaurant Ronto Roasters. It’s so fun that you can order a “Ronto Wrap” and feel like you’re eating a true meal from Tattooine…but it’s really just a pricey sausage gyro that tastes just-okay 🙃
You can make most meats into a meal from your favorite fantasy stories with a little creativity. Sausage works great because it’s a bit of mystery meat to begin with, ha! I split some hot dogs lengthwise and sautéed them with butter (and shared the pan with halloumi and the broccolini-bean leftovers from the pizza.) Then I sautéed a pita a little and put the stuffings inside and told the kids we were eating ronto meat. It was a very successful lunch!
Tortilla Fairy Wands
Preheat your oven to 375. Give your kids flour tortillas and some clean scissors, and let them make their own wands! Stick-shapes are easiest, but if you can make stars, even better. (It’s not great to eat markers, but we drew stars with markers and tried to cut inside the lines so we wouldn’t get ink on our food. But if they’re non-toxic it’s not that big a deal 😅)
Then rub them with melted butter and add some sparkly sprinkles on top! Bake on top of parchment paper or a silicon mat for about ten minutes and you should get a firm, usable wand that also tastes like a deliciously sweet chip. Seriously, it’s surprising how yummy these are.
You can also give your kids cookie cutters and let them make their own little tortilla cookies. Here’s our pre-baked batch.
Gigglewater
There’s a scene in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them when the muggle Jacob drinks some Gigglewater. He takes a sip, then has a quick burst of laughter.
You can turn any drink into Gigglewater; just tell your kids that it makes you laugh and encourage them to play along. It doesn’t take long before pretend laughter turns into real laughter 😉 We used Lemon Elderflower Soda from Trader Joe’s.
By the way, Harry Potter’s birthday is July 31st, a week from Sunday. It’s a lovely excuse to make a Happee Birthdae Harry cake, if you enjoy baking.
Lembas Bread (and other LOTR recipes)
You can wrap scones in leaves (or paper leaves) and tie them with string to make Elven Lembas Bread from Lord of the Rings. Tell your kids the legend that “one small bite is enough to fill the stomach of a grown man.”
Back in January, we even shared a whole Hobbit-themed week of meal inspiration!
