Simple, Stunning Art with Cutouts
lots of fun with simple frames (you only need paper + scissors)
Have you ever seen paper cutout art by Rudy Willingham? Taking a cue from his creative paper cutouts, this fun little activity is great for kids of all ages and encourages time outside.
It’s very simple; all you need to do is draw or print out an image, cut out an inside section of it, and find things in your surroundings that might look cool in the open space.
We made some simple printables for you to get you started! Click below for the PDF. You get to pick out whichever section you cut out: the hair, the dress, the ball, the TV screen…up to you!
If you have an X-acto knife, that’s ideal, but to model the simplest materials, we just used scissors for all the examples in this post. Gouge a hole in the middle, then wiggle your scissors in there and cut towards the edges of your lines to get the cutouts you want.
It’s fun putting different colored objects behind the object to “color” it.
Even curtains were lots of fun!
Bonus: if you have any photos of your kids printed out, it’s extra fun if you try this by replacing their colthes/hair/faces/whatever you want.
This might amuse your kids longer than you expected…and maybe you’ll find yourself getting carried away with creative ideas, too. Email us a pic of what you come up with!
This is also similar to our Color Walking idea from spring. A simple frame can make everything look like art!
I hope this little practice instills some gratitude in your family as you notice the beauty all around you.
Warmly,
Hope from Family Scripts
P.S. Which of these two dresses do YOU like more?
This reminds me of the time I used overhead projector plastic to cut out Chameleons and read A Color of His Own to the kids at the playground. And almost 3 years later parents come up to me to say their kids still have and use them. I keep extras in the cart now that siblings are growing old enough for their own. I had 2 kids lose theirs and ask for new ones.
This is going on my to do list. I especially like the one thats a photograph of your child.
I’m excited to try this! So fun. I think I like the second dress better, but they are both cute. Lol!
