I'm so sorry you've been going through so much, and what beautiful lessons you're learning through the hardship. You have agency and forward momentum. Heartbreaking and sweet at the same time.
This is beautifully done, Hope, and you have great wisdom and advice for those in similar situations.
I went through a divorce almost 30 years ago when my oldest was just 2. There was a lot of pain and acrimony involved with my ex that I wish on no one. The view I tried/forced myself to take with my son was the long term. I reminded myself that I would be his parent in the day-to-day sense for 18 or so years, but if I was short sighted in that approach that I would damage our chances for an adult relationship that would go on for much longer than that.
It hasn't been easy, and we've had more than our share of bumps. Today, he is married with a child of his own, and we have a strong, loving relationship built on honesty (brutal at times) and hard-earned (on both sides) trust, for which I'm eternally grateful. Thank you again for sharing, and wishing you nothing but the best.
Look at how much wisdom you've gained in such a short time, Hope. You just get more incredible every day.
Oh, Sarah, thank you so much. <3
